Events - Base Ball Hop - "The Fall Classic"

The Living History Society of Minnesota cordially invites you to the

Base Ball Hop - "The Fall Classic"

at Triune Masonic Lodge, St. Paul, Minnesota, October 30, 2004.

Leg It!

In the recent past, the traditional Harvest Hop, the Fall Celebration of Dance held by the LHS has gone by a few different names: "Autumn Antics" and "Jollification" among them. This year the Gentlemen of the Minnesota & Pacific Railroad team up with members of the St. Croix Vintage Base Ball Club to re-create a period "Town Ball" Dance, wherein the citizenry hosts the Visiting Players as well as their own. Given this theme, the Hop will be the Base Ball Hop, or The Fall Classic.

Leg It!

The day will feature dancing, food and fellowship. The Traditional Victorian American evening will feature delightful dancing to the eloquent melodies of the Camptown Ladies, bountiful buffet, a Toast competition, and a surprise or two.

In Henry Sibley's [Adapted] Words: Whereas Base Ball is destined to become emphatically a National Game, and that the best thing any Society can do will be to encourage its development, a Jollification will be held in honor of the Friendly opponents of the First Nine of this City on October 30. Base Ball and Dance develops the muscles and conduces to the general health of the devotee, but more importantly begets a general acquaintance by bringing together the Mass of Citizenry from a distance to occupy their time and prevent them from visiting places and indulging Habits which are improper and to be avoided.

Details

The day, Saturday October 30, 2004, begins at 9:00 AM with a Dance Workshop lead by our Dance Master and Artist Members of the LHS skilled in such techniques. Muffins: If you can walk in a circle the size of a modern basketball court, you are qualified to attend the Dance Workshop and you can dance. A Hearty Lunch will be provided during the Dance Workshop. The workshop itself is included with the registration fee. During the Hearty Lunch, members of the LHS will review Ballroom Etiquette in preparation for the evening.

Modern, comfortable clothing with good dancing shoes is encouraged for the Dance Workshop. The Dance Workshop breaks at 2:30 PM, freeing your afternoon to catch some rest and complete any last-minute preparations you might have for the Big Dance.

For the evening festivities, period daywear--or your period Base Ball uniform, should you have one--is appropriate and encouraged, though not required. You may come in modern clothing or more formal period attire, as is your pleasure.

Dressing rooms will open at 6:00 PM for both men and women. The ballroom reopens at 7:30 PM for the "First Pitch" and the Grand March starts promptly at 8:00PM.

Dance cards will be provided for both men and women. Among the dances will be Waltz, Redowa, Polka, Reel, Quadrille, and Schottische. The Fall Classic is open to those 14 years of age and older. Come to DANCE!
